New friends in Agriculture
I went to collage in Texas. It was a university with a whole lot of people from every part of Texas. I was not from Texas and my thick Chicago accent gave it away. I did not really understand the concept of cowboys and Texans wearing their big ten gallon hats around campus. It was weird to me because I always thought cowboys and Indians were on TV in John Wayne shows. I did not watch John Wayne movies. I was a city boy to be sure. I majored in marketing. The cowboys majored in farms and agriculture. I looked around the campus for a place to live and found a small house called Spivey house close to campus. It was like a mini dorm with about twenty or so people in it. The university did have those huge dorms that held hundreds of people but the small one seemed cool to me. When I walked in the cowboys there surprised me. They chewed tobacco and spit in empty Coke cans; they wore boots and tucked their jeans inside them. They talked funny to me and some of them scuffed at me when they saw me. Their agriculture mindset blew me away. I had very long hair and of course, the comments came out. I did not care really but I did want to have a good time in school, not be like this. Well, time went by and I marched to class and the such. I walked in the lobby straight to my room. This went on for weeks and weeks. No one really talked to me there but I did make friends in other places, at class at the bars and playing catch or sports outside the dorms. I was still upset at these student agriculture cowboys. I got mad one day while in the lobby at another one of their stupid comments. I blew up and got in one of the cowboy’s faces and surprisingly, he did not fight back. He backed off and so did I. “your kind of tough for a hippie”, he said. I could not help but laugh and he laughed to. “I ca not help where I am from you know and I bet you cowboys might look good in long hair too.” I left but the next day things began to get better. I drank beer with the agriculture cowboys in the lobby, helped them with business classes and played spades with them between classes. We even went to cowboy bars together but I really did not like the music. The girls looked though. I was surprised how well these clumsy cowboys could dance and the two-step looked pretty good. You have to hold a girl tight. I met a cowgirl who tried to teach me to do it. I never got that good at it but it was fun. We all became very good friends as time went on and I even renewed my contract to live agriculture style for next semester. It just goes to show you that if people come together or are forced together they just might get along. It happens all the time in the armed services. You become brothers and would die for each other. I became brothers with the cowboys. Good luck.

If you know absolutely nothing about Agriculture then you might be unaware to the fact that it touches your every day life in a large way and even has a major influence over the economy. The term represents the production of food by means of farming and forestry.

Farming crops is an essential cornerstone to the economy and the nutrition of our society. Because of the current and undeniable future importance of Agriculture in our world, this is a successful field to go into as a career with a wide arena of opportunities.

Earning a degree in this field include positions like lab researcher, farming, field consultants, business account management, government jobs, quality assurance, lab technicians, crops specialists, machinery technicians, scientists, consumer business managers, data processors, nutritionists, analysts, educators, health services, marketing, sales, environmental jobs, lawyers, tax analysts and so on. You can see that is takes every angle of running a business to support the vast crop industry. Clearly, earning a degree in this field or even studying an area such as law, tax, etc with a specialization in Agriculture is a sure way to protect your future career.

Crops are not the only product of Agriculture and all that it embodies. Animals and livestock play a major role under the umbrella of agricultural studies.

Animal science careers in biology, medicine and health, caretaking, farm management, animal protection, horse training, fish farming, horse racing, horse and livestock breeding, animal therapy and more all make animal lovers assured to know they will have a career in whatever specialty or niche field they enjoy the most.

Taking a job as a veterinarian to a horse farm or fish hatchery is a full time job and one that can bring a lifetime career to an individual. Getting through school and building a resume will take determination and focused effort, but it can be done. Working from the bottom of the ladder upwards is still as rewarding, as long as one is involved in the industry he or she loves. Even starting off or interning as a stable hand will bring joy to the heart of an animal lover. This is a great way to start and begin building connections and networks with those who have already created success in a career of animal medicine or caretaking.

Agriculture can also represent an economical study. Agro-economics represents the specific study of a nation’s agricultural economy. Agro-economists may also study the financial state of farmers, large operations and the nation’s crop as a whole.

The commercial farming industry is not one without regulations, requirements and penalties. The FDA, Food and Drug Administration implements and enforces many detailed regulations and requirements on farmers who grow and harvest food that is sold into the population for consumption. Farming your own garden or vegetation does not fall under the jurisdiction of the FDA, but if they have reason to believe it poses a threat to the population, they very well may begin an investigation.

Aside from produce and food, the FDA regulates and approves prescription drugs within the U.S. The department is set in place to regulate research, tests, and approval of drugs before they are given to the population. All of these regulations and requirements for drugs and food are set in place to ward against health epidemics and harm to the population.

People are really judgmental when you really get down to it. For whatever reason, our society tends to stigmatize certain academic paths. If you are studying philosophy, then people might very well make fun of you for majoring in “homelessness” (indeed, this is a joke that I told myself—as a philosophy minor). If you are majoring in English, then people might very well criticize you for aspiring to impossible heights. “You’re never going to make it as an author,” they’ll say, flipping through the pages of their business textbook. And perhaps worst of all, if you are flipping through a used agriculture textbook , people might walk up to you and chastise you for treading such a boring path. “What, you’re going to grow corn for a living?” they’ll ask, hoping to throw you off of your guard. Well, reader, the sooner that you learn it, the better: what other people think about your academic path… it just doesn’t matter. If you know that you are happy with what you are doing, then there is no reason for you to feel bad about doing it! Don’t feel ashamed about flipping through your used agriculture textbook –don’t feel ashamed in the slightest! Rest assured that you are doing important work, and drone out the grating words of the naysayers.

You don’t even have to read your used agriculture textbook for very long to realize that what you’re doing is important work. It’s just a fact. While people might criticize you for doing “simple work”, they simply do not know what they are talking about. Everyone in this country eats. And everyone who eats gets their food from farmers. If they are going to make fun of farmers, then they are, in effect, making fun of themselves for eating. Well, that just doesn’t make much sense, now does it?

Think about that joker who keeps making fun of your used agriculture textbook . What, exactly, is he doing to make life better? What, if anything, is he doing to improve the lives of the people who surround him? In all likelihood, nothing. Do not feel bad about studying a subject that people chastise. As you can see, the chances are that they simply do not know what they are talking about.

At the end of the day, when your head hits the pillow, you can rest assured that you are doing something valuable by studying your used agriculture textbook . It takes a special kind of person to devote his life to helping others; and when you decide to pursue farming as a living, you are, in effect, devoting your life to helping other people. While you may not be hailed as scientists are hailed; while you may not be hailed as architects, doctors, or lawyers are hailed—you are performing a service that our country (indeed, our world) cannot go without.

Rest assured, reader, that when your opponents go to the store, they are reaping the rewards of what you sow. Without you, they would not be able to live lives that enable them to make fun of your efforts. Their criticism is shallow, and you do not have to take it to heart. The sooner that you learn this lesson, the sooner that you can move on with your life, producing things that other people actually need.

When you set out to pursue your true calling, there are a lot of things that you have to take into consideration. Where do your true interests lie? Are your personal interests compatible with any careers that you know about? Are your talents and skills things that you can use as leverage within a professional context? And, does your local university offer an academic path that will allow you to pursue your interests in a productive, interesting fashion? All of these are questions that any college student should ask herself at one point or another. Of course, if you are interested in working with your hands—or if you are interested in working outdoors—then you might consider looking into the broad field of agriculture. Indeed, when you’re at the store, you may find that used agriculture textbooks make for a surprisingly interesting read.

Know, first and foremost, that I’ve misled you slightly, here. Not all of the jobs described in your used agriculture textbooks are going to require that you work with your hands, or even require that you work outdoors. Indeed, many of these jobs are going to violate the stereotypes of farming, as it were. If you are not crazy about working with your hands or working outdoors, then you are going to be able to find an agricultural job that meets your needs. You might, for example, study agriculture and business management when you are in college, hoping to help local (or international) farming operations run efficiently and effectively. On the other hand, you might choose to study biochemistry and agriculture, hoping to use your knowledge to develop newer, safer, and cleaner farming technologies. As you are leafing through your used agriculture textbooks , be sure that you are beginning to think about what kind of job you are going to want to pursue when you finish your studies. That way, you’ll be able to plan for your courses appropriately.

Of course, the other thing to take into account, here, is that you can work with your hands (and work outdoors) if you pursue a degree in agriculture. If you are genuinely interested in running a farm—or if your family already owns a farm and you’d like to help out—then you are going to be able to study everything that you need to know to become an effective worker. Used agriculture textbooks devote large sections of their time to explaining the ins and outs of the farming industry: typical pitfalls, typical solutions to problems, and the like. If you so prefer, you can take a much more hands-on approach when it comes to studying agriculture. Many Midwestern schools are even going to run their own farms, allowing for agricultural students to get some hands on experience before they even graduate!

When it comes down to pursuing a career in agriculture, you are going to want to be sure that you are paying careful attention to your used agriculture textbooks . The world of agriculture is broad and demanding, so you’re going to have to be sure that you understand where you are headed. Lest you settle for spinning your wheels and not making much forward progress, you need to develop a clear understanding of where you are starting out and where you desire to finish. Truly, that is the name of the game.

When it comes to farming, many people seem to think that it’s just “the simple life”. Indeed, many people think that very little thought goes into a farming operation. While they’re ready and willing to admit that the work is hard; while they’re ready to admit that the hours are long and backbreaking—they’re not altogether willing to admit that a great deal of thought goes into the modern farming operation. Of course, if you’ve read a few agriculture textbooks , then you know how wrong these people really are. There’s a ton of work that goes into running a modern farm operation, and the job is by no means easy.

First and foremost, agriculture textbooks are going to stress the importance of proper waste disposal. This, of course, is an aspect of farming that very few people seem to acknowledge, much less understand. Really, though, it makes a great deal of sense when you think about it. If you have thousands of animals (perhaps hundreds) bunched into one space, they’re going to produce a great deal of waste. Of course, animal waste can have a very harmful effect on the environment if it is not handled properly. Part of what farmers must do, then, is figure out a way to keep this waste under control. Making their jobs even harder, they have to figure out a way to make use of this waste.

Of course, agriculture textbooks often cover the ways in which you can turn large amounts of waste into fuel. That’s right: animal waste is a valuable source of fuel. Many pig operations, for example, use large, silo-like buildings to store the waste that their pigs produce. The methane gas from this waste is filtered through a system of pipes, and it eventually ends up in one large, concentrated chamber. This gas can be burned to heat and power the farm. And because it’s not being tossed onto the ground, it’s not hurting the environment in the slightest. If farming were a simple endeavor, these kinds of systems would hardly be necessary!

Agriculture textbooks also devote a great deal of time to discussing the safety measures that farmers have to go to in order to make sure that their animals are not getting sick. When you have tons of animals packed into a small space, you have to be sure that you are not allowing them to get sick. One illness (especially amongst pigs) can kill thousands of animals if it isn’t kept under careful watch. Thus, farmers have developed complex chemical showering systems, such that farm workers cannot spread their harmful bacteria to the animals with which they work.

From the very moment that you pick up your agriculture textbooks , you’re going to know that farming is not the simple operation that it once was. With greater demand for meat and vegetables, farms are increasing in scale. Indeed, they’ve become full-on industrial operations, requiring farmers to exercise the tactics that any factor manager would have to employ (i.e. safety, sanitary, etc…). Of course, none of this should stop you from picking up your books at the store if you think that you are cut out for this kind of work. It’s challenging and it’s time consuming, but by becoming a farmer, you can really give back to your country.

Are you trying to figure out how to turn your agriculture textbook (and all of the time that you spend studying it) into a viable career, then you shouldn’t be in a state of panic. While there is always tons of demand for talented agricultural professionals, the supply of these professionals is, in certain areas, rather limited. Thus, you can look forward to entering a relatively untapped market (something that those computer buffs can’t brag about!). Of course, when you are just starting out, you might be at a loss for where to turn next. Use this article as a rough roadmap to your future.

While you’re spending plenty of time pouring over your agriculture textbook, that doesn’t necessary mean that you want to spend your time farming, now does it? And really, I bet that you’re tired of hearing that all of the time. “Oh, you’re studying agriculture? So, you want to be a farmer?” Rest assured, reader, there are tons of ways for you to make use of the knowledge that you’re picking up as an agriculture student.

If you care about our environment, and you’d like to be sure that the farmers in your area are not doing anything to harm the environment, then you might choose to get a job with the city conducting agricultural inspections. This work can be rather rewarding, as you’ll be making your community a safer (and healthier) place by making sure that farmers adhere to local agricultural guidelines. Once you’ve studied your agriculture textbook, you’ll know how to conduct water tests, making sure that your towns water supply has not been tainted by fertilizers and other farming chemicals. Of course, you are also going to be test to make sure that your local facilities are disposing of their waste products (animal, plant, etc…) in the proper fashion. Truly, if you care about keeping your community healthy, then you are going to enjoy this job a great deal.

However, if you’d rather spend you time working with farmers, then you might choose to start up an agricultural consulting company. Drawing upon the knowledge from your agriculture textbook, you’re going to be able to help farmers increase the efficiency of their farming operations. You might choose to help farmers convert their animal waste into energy, showing them how to convert methane gas into usable heat (and electricity). Or, you might choose to introduce local farmers to fuel-efficient tools—tools that are not powered by gasoline, and tools that, believe it or not, run on electricity and solar power. If you take on this kind of job, you’ll quickly become a farmer’s best friend. You’ll be saving them boatloads of money, which means that they’ll make more money when they ship their products out to the local store.

At the end of the day, you can really make use of your agriculture textbook in some pretty great, professionally-minded ways. If you are still at a loss for what you are going to do when you complete your undergraduate studies, though, simply arrange to meet with a few people who are in the agriculture business right now. Ask them what they’d be looking for from a consultant—from an assistant—and then set about checking into whether or not you are going to be able to provide that kind of service for a profit.

Earning a degree form a college or university can be the difference between whether you end up working a “job”, or end up with a satisfying, and well-paying, career. There is no single thing other thing that will increase your earning abilities, and attractiveness to prospective employers, as much as having a college degree. If you are already planning on attending a college or university to receive a degree in whatever field of study interests you most, then you are well on your way to financial security, but what of your current finances? The price of attending a college or university has been on the increase for years, and that is just for the tuition. The price of housing, food, and gasoline have also risen substantially over the course of but a few short years; for a person to be able to afford attending a college or university, and receiving the degree that will allow you to find a satisfying, and financially rewarding career, you must find ways to save money wherever you can.

One area of your college experience that affords you to save a significant amount of money, and that is often overlooked, is the cost of the many different textbooks you will be required to purchase to receive instruction in your college courses. College textbooks can be very expensive, some of them costing hundreds of dollars each, so it is not difficult to see how very quickly such an expense can add up. Thankfully, you can easily save money off of the cost of all the college textbooks you will be required to purchase by simply buying used textbooks.
